Department of Community Medicine
The Vision
The department aims to impart community-oriented teaching and training, equitable patient care, and participatory research.
The Mission
To provide equitable services and develop appropriately skilled, learned, and compassionate professionals through
The Science of Community Medicine deals with the prevention and promotion of human health along with appropriate treatment. The department has been actively providing these services since the institute's inception and plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the community and the medical college. The department teaches and trains about 600-650 undergraduate students and interns of MBBS, BPT, and Nursing. Early clinical exposure is also provided to undergraduate MBBS students through Family Adoption Program (FAP). Innovative approaches are applied during the foundation course to make students acquainted with the public health infrastructure and help them understand the importance of the depth of this profession through cine medicine. Sensitive issues like LGBTQ and their health issues, Tribes and their issues, gender-based issues, etc. are also discussed with students to sensitize them to health aspects of vulnerable populations.

Facilities in Department
The vision and mission of the department are achieved through the following facilities
1. RHTC- The rural health training center is located at CHC Kunjpura, which is an approximate distance of 12 km from the college. The center caters to a population of nearly 1 lakh. It has a dedicated interns' hostel that facilitates intern teaching and training, besides providing 24*7 patient care. The center is also utilized for the teaching of MBBS undergraduate students. Health promotion and community awareness activities are also organized periodically for the general population and field level workers. Participation is done in various outreach activities along with the field level workers.
2. UHTC- The urban health training center is located at UPHC Ramnagar, which is almost 3 kms from the medical college. The population catered to by this center is approximately 51000. The center is utilized for teaching and training MBBS and BPT interns and teaching MBBS undergraduates. Health promotion and community awareness activities are also organized periodically for the general population and field level workers.
3. Department Museum- The department museum has charts, IEC material, and drug kits related to different National Health Programs. There are specimens and models related to entomology, environmental health, sanitation, nutrition, immunization, and family planning. These materials help students better understand the concerned curriculum. There is a separate section on cine medicine where posters and catalogues of various movies in multiple languages are available, and students are taught about movies based on health issues.
4. Research Lab- This lab enables hands-on training and the demonstration of various activities and instruments of public health importance.
5. Department Library- There is a spacious library with 85 books and a few journals. There is ample space and seating arrangement for all faculty members and doctors for departmental meetings.
6. Demonstration rooms for student classes- There are two demonstration rooms with a seating capacity of 60 students each to implement the newer education techniques like small group learning/teaching. One of them is equipped with an audiovisual system also.
7. Immunization Clinic- Routine Immunization Clinic is functional at 2nd Floor, OPD block for provision of routine vaccination under National Immunization Program. A separate newborn immunization clinic is also operational on the 1st Floor, near the labour Room, IPD block for the provision of birth vaccines to babies born in the institution.
8. NIROGI OPD- The department is the institutional nodal point for the flagship program of the Government of Haryana. Screening, identification, testing, and data management of NIROGI beneficiaries are done at NIROGI OPD, located on the 4th floor of the OPD building.
The department faculties are a part of various important committees of the institute. The department played a substantial role in implementing and providing COVID-19 vaccinations and contact tracing during the pandemic.

Health are essential aspects of the department. An ICMR-STS project has been accepted
by the ICMR, Delhi and completed by a 2017 batch MBBS student under the
mentorship of the departmental faculty.

ICMR-MRHU project
titled ‘Understanding psychological determinants and other mediators in tobacco
cessation and their relationship with quitting: A longitudinal, quantitative

The department is
collaborating with PGI Chandigarh for a state level survey on NCDs.
FUTURE
PLANS
1.
Expansion of community-based outreach preventive,
promotive & curative care with an effective linkage mechanism to KCGMC
Karnal.
2.
Establishment of a Health Education Unit (HEU) at OPD area under the aegis of
Department of Community Medicine to aware the patients and their attendants in
the hospital about all the major public health issues and govt health welfare
policies.
3.
Organization of a state/zonal level public health conference.
4.
Conduction of Research Methodology workshop for residents and Demonstrators of
the Institution.
